Embracing Childhood Wounds: A Guide To Divine Mother Healing

I first encountered the idea of the Divine Inner Mother while watching a documentary on Yogananda many years ago. The documentary described a period of intense grief in Yogananda’s life, following the death of his mother.

One day he had a mystical experience where he heard the universal mother speak to him and reveal that she had always been watching over him. This experience helped him realize that the nurturing loving energy he had connected with through his earthly mother hadn’t just disappeared. It was a universal energy that was still with him and would always be with him.

As an infinite and universal energy, the Divine Inner Mother exists throughout the entire universe and moves through everything that exists. She has no definitive shape or form and no beginning or end. You can see her manifest through nature, anytime a human being or animal intuitively extends loving care and nurturance to another living being.

The Divine Mother energy is not tied to any particular gender or religion. It transcends all forms and faiths. While I often refer to the Divine Inner Mother as "she," this energy is accessible to everyone, regardless of gender identity.

Even men or women who are deeply in touch with their masculine side can be strong channels for this compassionate, nurturing energy. It doesn't matter what gender you identify with or if you don't identify with a gender at all—you can still connect with this energy.

While the Divine Inner Mother energy is universal, how it manifests through and to you is deeply personal. When my clients connect to this energy, they often perceive it differently – some see it as a radiant sun, others as a mother bear, or a faceless mother figure. There’s no right or wrong representation of her because how she manifests is unique to each individual.

Once you open yourself up to this energy, the Divine Inner Mother energy can begin to show up for you in very tangible ways. For example, I once had a beautiful experience during a somatic experiencing session with another practitioner, where I spontaneously began rocking myself like a baby, feeling held, cuddled, and comforted. It was a clear manifestation of the Divine Inner Mother energy showing up to express her love and care for me during a particularly stressful time in my life.

The Divine Inner Mother energy is a source of unconditional motherly support for us. Connecting to this energy allows you to feel seen, held, comforted, supported, and uplifted, much like being in the presence of a loving human mother.

As children, we need the presence of a loving figure in our lives in order to learn to connect to the Divine Mother energy within us and work through painful emotions. When our mothers don’t hold loving space for us, we end up storing these emotions in our physical and energetic bodies.

As a spiritual coach, it feels amazing to witness clients release decades of long-held painful energies simply by connecting with the Divine Inner Mother’s nurturing presence.

The Divine Inner Mother energy is eternal, which means that we can always rely on her to be there for us. Unlike an earthly mother figure, who may not always be available to us, who may not act consistently loving or supportive toward us, or who will likely pass away before us, the Divine Inner Mother energy is always present.

She serves as a constant source of comfort and security for us, because we don’t have to live in constant fear of losing access to her energy. Realizing that we have access to an eternal and unlimited fountain of unconditional love and support can bring an incredible sense of peace and joy, especially for those of us experienced abandonment or neglect as children.

All open-hearted souls are already embodying the Divine Inner Mother energy—it’s what allows them to care so deeply for others. Unfortunately, many of us forget that we can naturally embody the same love and support we so freely give to others for ourselves.

One of the things I love most about working with The Divine Mother Energy is that we all have direct access to her. We don’t need a middle person to connect with this energy.
